Do you need some 5th-grade homeschool curriculum ideas?
I’m sharing what we are using for our 5th grade homeschool year but you could use these ideas for a slower 6th grader or an advanced 4th-grader.
I’ve tried so many different curriculums and homeschool styles over the years.
I look for curriculums that are simple in nature, don’t require cumbersome teachers manuals, and can be used with multiple children pretty easily.
5th-Grade Homeschool Curriculum – Top Picks
5th-grade Math Curriculum
This year we are using Math Lessons for a Living Education Level 5 for our Math.
I am also printing out some drill sheets for further review on math facts to use daily.
I chose this particular math curriculum because it incorporates real-life math situations and stories explaining the math concepts for those who are not math-minded.
You can read my Math Lessons for a Living Education review here.
5th-Grade Language Arts Curriculum
I’m using a few different things for language arts this year.
I think my kids need a strong focus on grammar since we went a little light last year in grammar.
First Language Lessons Level 3 from The Well Trained Mind just takes a few minutes a day and is a strong grammar program.
It contains diagramming, narration, dictation, and poetry.
Considering it can be done in just a few minutes a day, it seemed like the perfect addition to our main language arts program.
If your child was strong in grammar skills, I don’t think it would be necessary to add.
I’m combining that with Language Arts for a Living Education level 5 which is a mixture of reading, writing, spelling, grammar, book reports, and vocabulary and will be our main program for the year.
You can read my full review of Language Arts for a Living Education here.
It’s a Charlotte Mason style language arts that is open and go, no teachers manual required.
In addition to both these actual workbooks, we also make sure to check out good books from the library.
I always want my kids to be reading something and we frequent the library weekly.
5th-grade Science Curriculum
We are using Apologia Exploring Creation with Anatomy for 5th-grade and 6th-grade.
This is a Charlotte Mason style science curriculum that uses notebooking exercises instead of your typical textbook/answering questions.
I went ahead and also got the student notebooks along with the Apologia text and I’m so glad I did.
There are colorful cut out books, copy work, experiments and beautiful notebooking pages inside for each lesson.
Apologia provides a nice family-style science curriculum where you can easily combine several grades and keep the whole family on one topic.
5th-grade History Curriculum
We are using America’s Story 3 by Master Books this year for history.
It’s a one-year history curriculum starting in the early 1900s up to modern times.
They have an additional 2 levels for early America and the Civil War period to 1900.
The “textbook” is full of beautiful colored pictures and an easy to understand narrative. There is a “teachers guide” with maps, workbook pages, and projects if you desire.
Both the text and teachers manual is available as a digital download. We got the printed textbook and the digital teachers guide so I can print out as many worksheets as I need.
You can really adjust this curriculum to however much you want to put into it. There are lots of worksheets and activities to choose from or you could just read, make your own notebook pages and talk about the content.
Morning Time
I have found this Morning Time Plans to be a great help. It incorporates art, poetry, music, nature study and good books into our mornings without being heavy.
The plans come in seasons (fall, winter, spring, summer) to follow along with your homeschool year and incorporate the outdoors.
They also have History Morning Time Plans available if you wanted some additional art, music, and activities to correspond with your history time period.
I’ve always had trouble getting these “subjects” like art, music, nature study, and other fine arts into our day but the Morning Time Plans have made it so easy and fun.
It’s really rounded out my other subjects so I don’t feel like we are missing anything.
If you need a few more ideas for your morning head over to Create a Morning Book Basket for some fun ideas.
Let me know what your 5th Grade Homeschool Curriculum top picks are so we can all learn together.
