I’m excited to give you my Math Lessons for a Living Education: Level 5 review today.
Math Lessons for a Living Education Level 5 is a 5th-grade math worktext with a Charlotte Mason flavor.
When the book arrived, at first glance, I thought the math program seemed a little on the light side but after digging into it I found myself surprised.
This math curriculum has several aspects I haven’t seen in any other math I’ve used so far.
Math Lessons for a Living Education: Level 5 Review
MLFALE (Math Lessons for a Living Education) is a very unique math program because it requires a lot of out of the box thinking from your kids.
In general, level 5 is going to cover
- Factoring
- 2 Digit Divisors
- Proper & Improper Fractions
- Common Denominators
- Multiplying & Dividing Decimals
- Word Problems
- Review of Addition, Subtraction, and Multiplication
Lessons are kept short requiring 15-30 minutes of time.
There is not a teachers manual which I love! All of the answers are in the back of the book.
I’ve been homeschooling for over 12 years and I am so tired of cumbersome teachers manuals full of explanations and busywork.
This math worktext really is open and go for you and your child. Any teacher notes are right on the page and that is minimal.
There is a schedule at the beginning of the book so you can check off boxes if that’s something you like to do.

Math using stories
New concepts are taught in story format instead of just explaining the math problem.
This is perfect for those kids who need real-life examples of “why” fractions are the way they are or for “how” multiplication actually works.
The stories in the math book explain concepts in a unique way instead of just studying example problems.
Fictional stories explaining how math is actually used helps your child grasp how math connects to their life.
Math using copy work
Math for a Living Education Level 5 uses copy work to re-enforce math definitions and meanings.
When a new concept is introduced your child will copy word for word exactly what they will be learning in sentence format.
This helps make a connection to what they are doing instead of blindly answering math problems.
Example Copywork: “Factors are all of the different numbers that divide evenly (without a

remainder) into a number. Pairs of factors are two numbers that, when
multiplied together, equal this number.”

Math with constant review
This math curriculum does a wonderful job of constantly reviewing previously taught concepts.
Each lesson ends with a review even if it’s only one problem of each kind. Every so many lessons, you will find a blank multiplication chart for your kids to fill in.
Math with real-life examples
This curriculum does a good job of tying math into regular life. It contains realistic story problems with measurements and examples we can all relate to.
There are multiple places throughout the book for your child to create their own math word problems.
By creating their own story problems, kids can create paths in their brain about how they would use these math skills in real life.
Math Lessons for a Living Education is by far the most realistic math program I have seen, the material is relatable to everyday life.
What I didn’t like
In general, there could be more problems per lesson. If you have a child who is weak in math facts, I think additional review may be needed.
I went ahead and printed off some review worksheets for free from Math-Drills.com which will be plenty to fill in this curriculum.
I’m using some basic review worksheets (1 a day) to make sure my kids have their math facts down and memorized.
If your child is strong in this area it wouldn’t be necessary to supplement this curriculum in my opinion.
Math Lessons for a Living Education Level 5 review is a more gentle program than I am used to but I think it makes up for it with the out of the box thinking required.
I love the stories to explain new concepts similar to Life of Fred curriculum and the copy work to re-enforce new concepts.
For someone who isn’t strong with numbers like myself, it really helps to cement the concept and bring understanding using these techniques.
