Today I’m explaining what my 6th-grade homeschooler will be using for curriculum.

I’ve done so many different homeschool styles in the past, I still like to mix and match them.

If you have a middle schooler and are not sure what to choose for their subjects, I invite you to take a look at what we are doing and get some ideas.

Since we did anatomy and modern times last year for our 5th-grade curriculum, I wanted to make sure we covered different topics this year.

As a homeschool parent you can use whatever grade or level material you think would be a good fit for your child.

I often overlook “graded material” or levels and just focus on what topics I want to give to my children.

6th Grade Homeschool Math

For math this year we went with Saxon 7/6 books.

I know Saxon looks kinda dry but it’s an excellent math program.

Using constant repetition, the concepts really stick in your child’s head.

Each lesson is a bit long for us so I skip the very top mental math portion making each lesson 30 questions and a speed drill page.

It’s not the prettiest math in the world but of all the math curriculums we have done, I think it works the best.

6th Grade Language Arts

For this year’s language arts we went with The Good and The Beautiful.

I loved how each daily lesson was laid out with a little bit of everything including grammar, spelling, reading, and writing.

It comes with a Creative Companion to include art and geography which are huge in our household.

I am in love with teaching geography and believe it’s so important to learn.

I’ve been busy creating study guides for our favorite books!

Percy Jackson The Lightning Thief is a favorite in our house so we will be reading it along with the Percy Jackson study guide too.

6th Grade Homeschool Science

For science this year I found an Abeka textbook very cheap at a local bookstore so I just ordered the worksheets to go with it.

I’m not usually a textbook type homeschooler but it felt right for this year since we haven’t used textbooks much in the past.

I do not use the teachers guides for the Abeka material.

It covers a variety of science topics so I plan on using the local library and parks to expand the lessons a bit.

6th Grade Homeschool History

For history I chose BJU Heritage Studies.

I love their biblical world view they put into their history books and how they highlight all people groups.

I do not purchase the teachers guide for these books.

Adding in some library books and biographies will bring this textbook to life.

We are at the library A LOT as homeschoolers so it’s easy for me to grab whatever topic we need for that week.

My 6th grader will also be practicing piano, visiting parks and libraries, swimming, and helping us cook meals.

We normally belong to a local homeschool group for field trips, parties, and fun events which helps to round out book work.
