Are you thinking of using Study.com for your homeschool curriculum? I’m sharing our experience with this online curriculum for middle and high school.

Study.com is an online learning platform for grades 3-College and it offers thousands of classes, courses, and tests.

It’s a video-based platform that includes transcripts, quizzes, flashcards, and online note-taking.

In this Study.com review, I’m sharing a few of my favorite things about Study.com for a homeschool setting.

Our Study.com Review for Online Homeschool Curriculum

It Uses Engaging Video Lessons

Every course on Study.com is full of engaging video lessons perfect for all ages. The information is presented in a clear and concise way.

It’s perfect for children who struggle with Dyslexia and get lost in large blocks of reading.

Your student can pause and take notes at any time, rewind the video, or rewatch it several times. You don’t have to worry about them missing the information.

There is also a PDF transcription under each video if they want to read what was in the video or use it to take notes.

My kids use the transcription to help take notes after they watch the video. Note-taking is something I personally require because I think it helps their brain retain the information better.

You Can Easily Customize Your Child’s Education

You can assign any class to your child, even college classes or classes below their grade level. It’s all available.

Maybe your child is behind in Math and needs some review but is ahead in History. With Study.com you can pick and choose exactly what class to assign them no matter the education level.

You can even custom assign random lessons from different classes and make your own course for them. The choices are endless.

This makes it perfect for kids with special needs or those who just need to work at their own pace.

This curriculum can be used as a full homeschool curriculum or just supplemental material, whatever your needs are at the time.

You Can Make Your Own Schedule for Study.com

There are no time constraints involved. You can make and set your own schedule as you wish. Your child works through the course at the pace you choose.

Need to go on vacation or take some sick days? Your child won’t get behind and they can pick up exactly where they left off in each lesson.

Maybe your child has been behind and you are looking for something to help fill in their educational gaps in learning? With Study, you can move through lessons quickly to find those missing areas of education.

Study.com even syncs with Google Classroom. I have uploaded my kid’s classes into Google Classroom as well as created some of my own Bible classes. Everything syncs together easily so all their work is in the same place.

Using Google Classroom is completely optional but may benefit those who are familiar with the platform or are using Study as a supplement and want all their child’s learning in the same place.

It Encourages Independent Learning

When my kids were little, we all sat together and I taught everything. Elementary ages need so much one-on-one time to learn how to read and write their letters properly.

Now that my kids are older, I want to encourage them to be independent and learn on their own.

Study.com gives them the opportunity to learn to take their own notes, review the flashcards, and learn the material without me standing over them.

I check the back end of the lesson and see what score they got on the quiz and I glance over their notes. I also ask them to give me a short summary of what they learned.

Study.com lets them take control of their learning process while I oversee. It’s perfect for high school ages.

Easily Manage Your Students in the Parent Dashboard

In the parent dashboard, I can quickly see classes that my student may be struggling in by looking at how many times they have taken the class quiz.

This gives me a red flag we may need to slow down and take more time going over the material in the video.

The dashboard gives me control over my student’s education without sitting in each lesson they complete.

It also allows me to quickly make changes to their education, move classes around or add another class I think they need.

Earn College Credits with Study.com

If you have a high schooler, you can use the College Accelerator Plan to earn college credit while your high schooler finishes their regular classes.

This plan allows your student to take a proctored exam right at home for college credit. Study.com partners with over 2000 colleges to help your student get a head start.

There are over 200 college courses for your student to choose from to begin earning college credit.

Who could benefit from Study.com in their homeschool?

  • Any student who does well with audio-visual learning.
  • A large family that needs help organizing curriculum for multiple children.
  • A parent who doesn’t have time to stand and teach each subject to each child.
  • A parent who is interested in their child earning dual credit for college.
  • Students who are Dyslexic or need to work at their own pace.
  • Students who have educational gaps in their learning.

Final thoughts on Study.com for online homeschool curriculum

Overall I’ve been very pleased with our experience using Study.com. My son is taking college marketing classes as an elective and it’s been a wonderful fit for my Dyslexic daughter.

The classes are very interesting but are not too long. Most average 3-5 minutes of new material.

However, I did note there isn’t a huge amount of writing instruction in most of the classes. We’ve added Institute for Excellence in Writing to teach writing instruction.

Please let me know your experience using Study.com so we can see if it’s a good fit for other families.

  1. D’Lyn Moser-Evans

I have been a teacher for 34 years. I live in Idaho and the extreme “ism” hasn’t hit here as much as it has in other areas of the country. I am looking for information on curriculum so I can teach my grandchildren from home and also currently looking at building a center to teach community children as well. I would love ANY information you can send me.

    1. Hi D’lyn, curriculum suggestions definitely depend on the ages of your grandchildren. My favorite companies have been conservative with a biblical worldview and include My Father’s World, Master Books, Sonlight, and Notgrass. You can’t go wrong with any of these curriculums. I do use more videos for high schoolers but not for elementary. I feel they need pencils, paper, and good books. I hope that gives you a good starting place. I do have reviews of some of these companies on my site. Also, Sonlight is such a good site to get book lists for the library. I’ve used their site to find great books for years. Blessings!
