If you have a lot of kids, homeschooling can seem overwhelming.

I have 4 children, so it would be crushing to have to teach 4 different sciences, 4 histories, 4 language arts…so on and so forth.

I’ve been homeschooling for over 12 years now and I can tell you there is a trick with how to homeschooling multiple ages together.

How to Homeschool Multiple Ages Together

When you have younger children and older children in middle school, it IS possible to combine them together on the same topic.

Their work will look different but, the topic is for the whole family.

Let me give you an example.

If the science topic is space:

  • Kindergartener may cut and paste a picture of the planets
  • 4th grader may write 3 sentences about space and label the planets
  • Upper-middle school could write a small report on an astronaut.

All the kids are learning about the same topic (space) but their work is adjusted based on their age.

Learning family style helps me the “teacher” from bouncing around and teaching 50 different things everyday.

What can be taught together?

Some subjects are easy to combine and others are not.

You won’t be able to combine math unless your kids are at the same level.

Your kids writing ability will also differ based on what they are able to do.

So what can you combine?

History, Science, and Bible are the easiest to combine.

In fact, a lot of curriculums are already built for these subjects to be taught together.

It saves so much time in the day if you can teach a lump of subjects family style and then go have your children do their math separately.

Homeschool Curriculum to Combine Multiple Ages

There are many curriculum companies that are built for you to combine ages but I will highlight my favorites.

My Father’s World

My Father’s World combines many grades for bible, some language arts, history, science, and literature.

I’ve done almost every year they offer and I can’t say enough good things about their curriculum and have a full review.

Their packages may seem a bit pricy but remember you are teaching multiple kids and multiple subjects with each package.

Gather ‘Round

Gather ‘Round is built for ALL AGES including preschool through high school.

Your whole family will work on the units together with appropriate worksheets. It covers all subjects including learning how to read for little ones.

I’ve written a review of Gather ‘Round and think it’s a wonderful way to learn family style.

Simply Charlotte Mason

Simply Charlotte Mason has a history, geography, bible all together family style. It does include some literature in the readalouds.

They also have an Enrichment Study for subjects like music study, poetry, scripture memory, and nature study.

It does include all grades K-12 for those subjects.

A Gentle Feast

A Gentle Feast covers every subject except math. You pick a history cycle to study and all the subjects will come out of that cycle.

There are language arts bundles that correspond depending on the ages you need.

A Gentle Feast is a great way to learn family style that is well organized and academically sound.

Creating Your Own Family Style

It wouldn’t be difficult to create your own family style learning for any subject you wish.

If you already own a curriculum, simply take the assignment or activity and add to it for older grades or simplify it for younger children.

Often times a coloring page can help younger children participate in whatever topic you are studying.

How to homeschool multiple ages together can be easy and a fun way to learn.
