Do you have a reluctant reader? I’ve compiled the best books for reluctant readers: Middle school age.
We are a reading family over here. I always encourage my children to read as I am sure you do as well.
Sometimes you have that one child who hasn’t found the magic of books yet.
Maybe they view reading as a chore and need to get a little momentum going before they fall in love with a book.
I have found that giving your reluctant reader small wins or small victories works best for building momentum.
A smaller chapter book that is slightly below their reading level will give them a feeling of accomplishment and make sure they are not overwhelmed with reading.
Once they capture that love of books you can move them to more challenging stories and series.
So what are the best books for reluctant readers to get a win?
Best Books for Reluctant Readers: Middle School
I have found it helpful to read the first few pages to my child or at least take turns reading every other page with them to help get them started.
Some of these books will be below middle school reading level and I have done that on purpose since you want your child to gain small victories by finishing a book.
The Boxcar Children Set – I have a 10-year-old reading this series now and she is loving it. It’s a great starter series into chapter books as the chapters are light and there are little illustrations. Perfect for boys or girls and one of the easiest reads on the list.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid Set – This funny easy to read series is perfect for any middle schooler and addresses topics they can relate too.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians – These are must-read books in my house. The main character Percy is dyslexic and struggles with ADHD. It’s a historical science fiction series that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Number the Stars – Takes place through the eyes of a girl hiding from the German troops during WWII. One of the best historical fiction books we have come across.
The Chronicles of Narnia Box Set – Magical and engaging, this science fiction series instills biblical truth and will keep you on the edge of your seat. You can enjoy the movies after you read the book!
The Little House Set – My girls adore getting a glimpse into pioneer life with the Ingalls family. They can’t get enough of their simple living and nature exploring.
Dork Diaries Set – Perfect for any tween girl, follow a diary full of laughs, awkward moments, and fun. These are full of wacky illustrations to break up the text.
The Giver – Haunting and complex, this story is about a government-controlled society and will engage any middle schooler to keep reading.
Whatever books you decide to give your middle schooler, remember to start slow and even consider giving a reward for finished books.
Sometimes we have to encourage our children to learn until they pick it up on their own.
