I’ve created a master homeschool high school literature list full of books I want my teens to read.

I can’t put enough importance on reading.

We are not doing study guides with all these books, I just want my teens to plow through these amazing books and enjoy them.

Homeschool High School Literature

Here is my master list of books for every high schooler to read.

These are in no particular order and a few of them are Christian in theme.

Do Hard Things – Alex Harris

Do Hard Things is one of the most important books your teenager will ever read. It will teach them not only to pursue God, but the importance of having high expectations for themselves.

This book is a must-read for every high schooler!

Love Does – Bob Goff

This book is light, fun, and just downright incredible! Bob Goff goes over the importance and impact of love in the everyday life, with writing that can get any teenager engaged.

Every high schooler will fall in love with Love Does.

Pride and Prejudice – Jane Austen

Pride and Prejudice is a classic for good reason. This book is chock-full of comedy, romance, and unbelievable character development.

Your teenager will absolutely love this masterpiece of a book. (and we’ve found a free study guide to go with it!)

Emma – Jane Austen

Also by Jane Austen, Emma is a book that every high schooler will love to read. With endless amounts of romance, comedy, and wit, they won’t want to set this classic novel down.

Every teenager needs a copy of this book!

The Lord of The Rings – JRR Tolkien

There are movies about this series for a reason, Tolkien’s writing and world-building techniques are simply unmatched. Everyone will enjoy this fantasy-adventure trilogy, even your stubborn teenagers.

Every high schooler needs to get their hands on Lord of the Rings!

Animal Farm – George Orwell

Animal Farm is something everyone should read at least once in their lifetime. Justice, equality, and political freedoms are all tackled in this legendary novel— something especially important in today’s world.

Make sure your teenager checks this one out! (and maybe check out this free study guide we found to go with it.)

1984 – George Orwell

1984, also by George Orwell, is a must-read. The brilliant writing goes into the issues of a totalitarian world in the most captivating way. It’s clear that Orwell knows what he’s doing, after all, this novel was required reading from the day it was published.

Your high schooler will love the complexity and writing of this one!

David and Goliath – Malcom Gladwell

David and Goliath may not be as well known as Animal Farm, but it’s just as important of a read. Gladwell goes over the significance of tackling large goals, and just how to do it, all through his incredible writing.

Your teenager needs a copy of this book asap!

The Tipping Point – Malcom Gladwell

Also by Malcom Gladwell, The Tipping Point is a must-read for everyone. This book captures today’s social epidemic’s weight and breaks it down in writing that any teenager can understand.

Every high schooler needs to read this book!

The Scarlet Letter – Nathaniel Hawthorne

The Scarlet Letter is truly one of the most beautiful books ever written. In this classic novel, Hawthorne masterfully encapsulates mankind’s struggle with sin, guilt, and pride.

This is something every teenager needs to read! (and something they should study with this free study guide we found!)

The Giver – Lois Lowry

The Giver is a book that everyone, young or old, will enjoy. Set in a dystopian world, this novel tackles the importance of human individuality and emotion.

Your teenager will want to read this book ten times over! (and maybe they could go over this free study guide we found while they’re at it.)

To Kill A Mockingbird – Harper Lee

To Kill a Mockingbird is a vital novel for every high schooler. Not only does Harper Lee tackle the horrors of racism, but her masterful writing also reminds us of the importance of compassion, and integrity in today’s world.

This is a must-read for every high schooler! (and a must-study with this free study guide we found!)

The Shack – William P Young

The Shack will steal the hearts of your teenagers. William Young uses beautifully written fiction to capture the vitality of spirituality, and how to engage with God in today’s world.

This faith-filled read is something every teenager needs to get their hands on!

The Great Gatsby – F Scott Fitzgerald

This book is a classic, The Great Gatsby, for great reason. Even though it was written in 1925, it’s still just as captivating now as it was 95 years ago. The humor and exquisite writing all do such an excellent job in tackling the virtues of friendship and love.

Your high schooler will adore this book! (and while they are reading it, you can assign them this free study guide we found to go with it!)

Lord of The Flies – William Golding

Lord of The Flies is one of the best books your teenager will ever read. This gritty survival-adventure novel teaches the vitality of innocence, integrity, and self-control in the midst of disaster.

The Book Thief – Markus Zusak

The Book Thief has won multiple awards for good reason. Mark Zusak has done an unbelievable job capturing the chaos of World War II in this phenomenal novel of bravery, humanity, and friendship.

Your high schooler will absolutely love this book!

The Screwtape Letters – CS Lewis

The Screwtape Letters is a classic masterpiece. CS Lewis (as always) does an incredible job with his writing, and perfectly tackles the issues of human temptation, all while instilling faith into the reader.

High schoolers everywhere need to read this book!

Mere Christianity – CS Lewis

Also by CS Lewis, Mere Christianity is a novel chock-full of faith, and goes over the importance of finding common ground with one another. It’s no wonder this book is a classic.

Your teenager will love this heartfelt read!

Fahrenheit 451 – Ray Bradbury

Fahrenheit 451 is such a captivating novel, and it’s great for every homeschool high school literature plan. Set in a dystopian society, this book captures the vitality of educating oneself and having integrity and courage in the face of hardship.

Your high schooler will thoroughly enjoy this book.

The Boy in The Striped Pajamas – John Boyne

The Boy In The Striped Pajamas is such a heartfelt, heart-wrenching novel. Boyne goes over the terrors and trials of World War II in this incredible novel.

Your high schooler needs to get a copy of this book.

The Catcher in The Rye – JD Salinger

The Catcher in The Rye has won awards for a reason. This coming-of-age novel encapsulates the anxieties of moving into adulthood and the value of innocence in today’s world.

Every teenager needs to read this book.

Dune – Frank Herbert

Dune is one of the most incredible science-fiction novels of all time (not to mention the fact that it’s a classic). Herbert’s engaging writing goes over the importance of bravery throughout the adventure and brilliance of the story, and it’s great for every homeschool high school literature book list.

Your teenager will absolutely love this book!

Brave New World – Aldous Huxley

Brave New World is such a great novel for people of all ages. Set in a dystopian society, this book goes over the vitality of individuality, community, diversity in today’s world.

Brave New World is a book every high schooler needs to read.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde – Robert Louis Stevenson

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a creepy, classic novel your teenager will adore. This book tackles the importance of morality and humanity throughout suspenseful writing.

Frankenstein – Mary Shelley

Frankenstein is such a masterfully written classic book, and it’s perfect for your homeschool high school literature needs. Shelley captures the vitality of nobility and prejudice in this great sci-fi novel.

The Count of Monte Cristo – Alexandre Dumas

The Count of Monte Cristo is one of the best classic high school books out there! The importance of bravery and perseverance are taught throughout the captivating writing in this novel.

The Invisible Man – HG Wells

The Invisible Man is an incredible classic. HG Wells intertwines the importance of character and integrity in this classic science fiction novel.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin – Harriet Beecher Stowe

Uncle Tom’s Cabin is vital reading for every homeschool high school literature set. This classic book goes over racism and how Christianity had an impact on slavery in America.
