I’ve got tried and true homeschool reading curriculums to get your kids reading.
Teaching your child to read well is probably one of the most important things you will do in your homeschool.
That’s because reading is involved in all the other subjects and is a foundational skill.
It might seem overwhelming but there are simple and adorable homeschool curriculums out there that will walk you through teaching your child to read in roughly 20 min a day.
I’ve personally used so many different reading curriculums over the years but I have landed on a few favorites I always recommend.

7 Best Homeschool Reading Curriculums
All About Reading
If you are looking for a full reading program that even works with learning disabilities and dyslexia then All About Reading is for you.
It’s a research-based and multi-sensory program that will get your child reading in about 30 minutes a day.
This program uses phonics and sight reading combined to cover various types of learners.
There are multiple levels so your child can jump in anytime and fill in educational gaps. All About Reading is perfect for older struggling students or a child ready to read.
The price of this program isn’t cheap but it’s a rock-solid curriculum that is well worth the money if you have a struggling reader.
Alpha Phonics
Don’t let this homeschool reading curriculum fool you. Sam Blumenfeld’s Alpha Phonics is fabulous.
This simple book is for beginning readers and has been around for 40 years. Step-by-step lessons in this book teach your child to read in just minutes a day using a phonics approach.
I love this book because it’s a snuggle-on-the-couch and learn-to-read type of curriculum.
No fancy programs, no supplies, and no need for a teacher’s manual. It’s truly an open-and-go homeschool reading curriculum.
If you are on a budget and your child is ready to read, Alpha Phonics is an excellent choice. It’s non-consumable and normally under $25.
Reading Eggs
Are you looking for an online reading program? Reading Eggs has online games and activities to teach your child to read in a fun and engaging way.
For ages 2-13, these online programs are a perfect reading supplement and can be done independently. A monthly subscription and your child can play reading games to improve their skills.
Although I don’t recommend ALL online learning for small children I do think this is a good reading supplement if your child is struggling to read.
It also provides educational screen time as an alternative to traditional video games.
Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons
This is another tried and true homeschool reading curriculum.
Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons is similar to Alpha Phonics mentioned above but offers some parent instruction.
Step-by-step lessons guide your child through phonics and into reading full sentences.
Personally, I like Alpha Phonics a bit better because the pages are way less cluttered but Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons is a solid reading curriculum choice.
Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons is a very affordable book that can be passed down to other children.
The Good and The Beautiful Language Arts
If you are looking for a full reading and language arts program, The Good and The Beautiful K package might be perfect.
This homeschool reading curriculum covers phonics, writing, reading, handwriting, grammar, spelling, geography, and art.
These programs are wholesome, stunningly beautiful, engaging, and pretty easy to run for moms.
There are large samples so you can see inside the program in every detail.
The Good and The Beautiful K program covers so much in an organized and fun way.
This program is definitely worth looking at for teaching your child to read and is very affordable as well.
Pathway Phonics
The Pathway Phonics reading book is similar to Alpha Phonics and 100 Easy lessons I spoke about above.
An all-in-one book that’s easy to learn and practice reading in a few minutes a day.
This best-selling book is perfect for grades K-2 and may be a better fit than online programs for those children who get overstimulated quickly.
Masterbooks Language Lessons for a Living Education
Masterbooks Foundations and Language Lessons are engaging and fun programs that are simple to run.
Full of color and beautifully illustrated, this curriculum is perfect for teaching your little one how to read and write.
Focused on ages 5-7 this homeschool reading program covers grammar, handwriting, spelling, and reading comprehension.
I’ve always appreciated Masterbooks simplicity in all their curriculum because I’m not an overly crafty mom and I don’t like a lot of extra fluff.
Whatever type of program you go with, reading is a foundation for your homeschool. A child that can read well is a child that can learn independently.
There’s no shame in switching reading curriculums mid-year if something isn’t working for you. Every child is different and you may need to find their learning style.
