Wondering how to organize your homeschool stuff?

Homeschooling can be messy.

Piles and piles of books, notebooks, random projects, pencils in the couch, and run away supplies.

I always fear visitors when we are schooling in the morning because our learning can look like chaos.

So what can you do with all of your homeschool stuff?

How to Organize Your Homeschool Stuff

Having 4 kids has taught me a lot about organizing and why I lean toward minimalism.

Even having the basic items with 6 people in the house is a LOT OF STUFF.

where to put homeschool supplies

For us, each child needs to have a box or bin to put their supplies in such as pencils, markers, scissors, and erasers.

It keeps the kids from fighting over items when you need them and it gives them an opportunity to take responsibility for the items.

“Lost your favorite pencil? Maybe you need to take better care of your supplies.”

Every homeschool mom ever

It’s easy and simple for each child to have a supply box.

Where to put homeschool books

We have a lot of books!

I’m sure your family does as well.

We are not blessed with a designated homeschool room at the moment so we school in the kitchen/living room area.

I keep a bookshelf in the living room with the main books we use every day.

You could easily get a cheap bookshelf to use or a cabinet that closes for a better look.

This bookshelf is inexpensive and will get the job done.

A cabinet helps to hide the mess but is a bit pricer depending on your budget.

Our closet houses the rest of the books which include reading books, history books, other random fun books.

The closet books are not ones we use daily, we just reference them occasionally as needed.

Library books are an exception.

They are kept in a book basket that is only for library books.

This keeps the books from getting overlooked and lost, plus my kids read them more often if they are in a big basket out in the open.

Where to put homeschool projects

Homeschool projects tend to get messy at my house.

I allow one project at a time (I’m not a crafty person) and that keeps things simplified.

We have a large window seal where we put ongoing projects but you could also use an empty counter space area or even a kitchen cart.

Just pick one designated spot so the projects don’t end up laying all over your house.

Where to put all the homeschool papers

I let my kids pick what to put on the fridge. They are allowed 1 paper or project to go up on the fridge at a time. (I have 4 kids but you could do more on the fridge with fewer kids.)

After the papers are done on the fridge I save the important papers in a folder. The rest of the papers go in the recycle.

I save items that are a good sample of their school work for the year.

With 4 kids I can’t save every single paper, I pick out some valued items or really special moments to save.

How to organize your homeschool stuff is a balance of understanding what to keep and what to let go of.

Keep out the most used items and put away the items that are only used a few times a month.

I know a mom who uses a cart for all of her homeschool items and it works very well.

I personally don’t have the room for a cart right now so our bin and bookshelf system works for the time being.

The most important thing is to be consistent with whatever system you use for your household.

You must follow up after school time and make sure the kids put away their supplies and books in the right spot.

Continue to follow up until it becomes a habit.

We don’t allow screen time until the kids have put their books and supplies away nicely.
